ProperMaid supplies caterers, cafes, delicatessens and retailers with innovative handmade cakes designed to delight the taste buds and competitively priced to maximise your profits. The key to ProperMaid’s success is our passion for ‘proper’ ingredients – the majority sourced from Yorkshire, ‘proper’ artisan production methods (with no artificial ingredients or preservatives) and, above all, innovative and unusual cake flavours such as Courgette & Lime, Beetroot and Chocolate, Liquorice and (that famous Huddersfield export and our signature cake) Dandelion & Burdock – a Great Taste 2012 Gold Award winner.
How it all started
Proper Maid was founded in 2008 by former dinner lady turned cake connoisseur Allison Whitmarsh, who identified a gap in the market for her unique cakes. After studying Hospitality Management at Huddersfield University Allison took advantage of grant aid and business mentoring offered by the university’s ‘Business Mine’ initiative and in July 2008, started baking from home with one customer. She began by creating homemade cookies and loaves as well as the ‘traditional cakes with a twist’ that have gone on to win many awards.
ProperMaid operates from a 1700m2 premises at Heritage Mills in Huddersfield. Whilst we boast a rapidly growing customer base we are determined to maintain our handmade methods and stay true to the service values that have made us successful. So, whether big brand or local village tea-room we promise you will receive a friendly, personal and professional service.

Food fit for a Dragon
In December 2012 ProperMaid appeared on the BBC’s Christmas special edition of Dragons’ Den and received offers from two of the Dragons. Having tasted our delicious Christmas Dinner Cake (which contains all the trimmings - minus the turkey!), ultimately it was Deborah Meaden, famous for not having cooked for 28 years, who took a stake in the business.
